The Hideaway

Montauk – 364 West Lake Drive

Mexican

Enter The Hideaway and go seek some real Montauk flavor.  The restaurant/bar is tucked behind the Diamond Cove Marina engulfed in an old boat yard, appropriately deemed one of Montauk’s best-kept secrets.  The open-air shack is best known for it’s Mexican cuisine, extensive tequila selection, and signature sangria’s.

At The Hideaway, food and drinks must be ordered separately due to some odd liquor law, however they are equally as enjoyable.  Frieda, from Chiapas, anchors the restaurant with fresh Mexican cooking and authentic home-style flavors, while Skip adds a beat of diversity to the menu with barbeque and seafood.

After a long day on the beach shredding waves and digging ditches, head to The Hideaway for a view of Lake Montauk and some afternoon delight.  I recommend the Mexican corn, along with the Shrimp or Fish Taco’s and Strawberry Pineapple sangria.

Dos Toros

West Village – Carmine Street Between Bleeker and 6th Ave

Union Square – 4th Ave Between 13th & 14th / UES – Lexington Ave Between 77th & 78th

Mexican

Where should I eat?  What am I in the mood for?  Should I eat something healthy?  Are you calling me fat? What should I order?  Should I add guac for a dollar?  Why is guac always a dollar?  Sometimes, deciding what to eat just isn’t easy.  If you constantly suffer from indecision, have no fear; Dos Toros is here.

Bite one, all wrap… bite two, some guac… bite three, a little sour cream mixed with a mouthful of guac and signs of cheese on the way.  Bite four, did I get chicken or steak?  We’ve all experienced disappointing burritos. Not at Dos Toros, where the protein allocation is proportionally as big as Barry Bonds' head.  Barry, did you know the human head weighs eight pounds?

Dos Toros hails from the San Francisco Bay Area with a simple menu and simply delicious Mexican food. Burrito, taco, or quesadilla; braised pork, grilled chicken, or grilled steak.  Cheese, salsa, and sour cream are included.  If you feel like that was too easy -- go ahead, add guac, or get your burrito on a “plato.”

When I walk into Dos Toros I feel like Steve Young circa 1994 -- in the shotgun position with the secondary giving a generous cushion.  Go deep with a burrito?  Hit a ten-yard buttonhook with some tacos or check down to a quesadilla?  Unlike 49ers punt returner Kyle Williams in the NFC Championship game, you can’t really make a mistake at Dos Toros.

I recommend the check down, or the quesadilla if you will.  Let’s face it, Alex Smith can’t throw the deep ball like Steve Young (and the burrito will most likely put you into a food coma).  The tacos come fully loaded, but I feel like I need to hit the showers when I’m done.  The quesadilla is basically a perfectly sized burrito, not your standard flat press.  Call it what you want -- quesadilla, perfectly sized burrito, whatever it may be -- it's the Golden Gate Bridge from hunger to satisfaction.

Move over Rice-a-Roni, New York’s got its own San Francisco treat.

Wahoo's Fish Taco

Flatiron - Park Ave Between 24th and 25th

Mexican Asian Fusion

I’m so high right now. Wait no, that’s the guy behind the counter. Welcome to Wahoo’s Fish Taco.

Three Brazilian bro’s grew up in Sao Paulo above the family Chinese restaurant, move to Orange County and become surfers. Confused? Still trying to figure out where Mexican food comes into play? Basically how I felt when I got up to the register to order. Maybe you can get second hand stoned...?

I wanted nothing more than to love this place. The idea is fresh and untapped in New York City. Shred some concrete on your long board over to Wahoo’s, grab some grub with the boy’s, and drink a brew at the bar. Head back to Union Square to do kick flips, pop-shove-it’s and slap stickers on telephone poles till the sun goes down. Totally gnarly. Just one slight problem; the food is mediocre.

Cajun fish tacos were a little dry, and the shrimp taco’s lacked any flavor. The Maui Bowl; teriyaki marinated steak with beans and rice had an interesting flavor, just not interesting enough to order it again. The food may be good enough for SoCal, but then again Seth Cohen was good enough for Summer Roberts.
